A young local woman, 20 year old Birna Brjánsdóttir, has been missing since early Saturday morning. Friends and family as well as the Metropolitan Police and Search and Rescue Units have been engaged in an extensive search for Birna since she was reported missing on Saturday. The case has received absolute priority from the Metropolitan Police, the local news site Vísir reports. Everyone who has any information regarding Birna or the case are urged to contact the Police.
Police is also searching for anyone who has information about the driver of a red Kia Rio which was seen near the location where Birna was last spotted on Laugavegur street shortly after 5 AM.

UPDATED Tuesday 11:30 Shoes which match those worn by Birna were found in Hafnafjörður, south of Reykjavík. Police does not rule out the shoes were planted at the scene. All available Police and Search and Rescue members are searching in and around Hafnafjörður harbour.

UPDATED Tuesday 17:00 Police believes it has found the red Kia Rio. The car was likely driven by foreign nationals. The driver is seen behaving suspiciously shortly after Birna's cellphone is turned off at 5:50 AM.

Police fears foul play
A chief superintendent with the Metropolitan Police told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that they have no clues as to where Birna might be located. She had been with friends at a downtown bar Húrra on Friday night, and is seen leaving the bar at 5 AM. Footage from security cameras then show her walking up Laugavegur street. The last sighting is at 5:25 AM near Laugavegur 31, just east of the intersection of Laugavegur and Klapparstígur streets. She cannot be seen in footage from cameras further up the street.
At the same time as she disappears from CCTV camera footage a red Kia Rio is seen driving along Laugavegur street. Police is trying to track down the driver of the car.
A communications mast in Hafnarfjörður town picks up signal from Birna's phone at 5:50, but the phone is turned off by someone shortly thereafter.
Family and friends appeal to everone
Birna lives with her father in the suburb of Breiðholt. Friends and family of Birna say it is extremely unlikely that she would have run away from home. Her mother told the local TV station Stöð 2 that Birna stays in constant contact with her and her father, and that it is completely out of character for her to disappear. She appealed to anyone who might be holding her to release her and for everyone who might have any information about her disappearance to contact the authorities.
Birna is 20 years old. She is 170 cm (5 ft 7in) tall, slender, with long light red hair and bangs. When she was last seen she was wearing black jeans, black Dr Martens boots with laces, a grey sweater and black fleece jacket with a hood.
