A young American man, born 1992, fell to his death in downtown Reykjavík early Saturday. The young man was traveling alone in Iceland. The Icelandic authorities have notified his family in the US of the accident.
The man fell 10 meters (33 ft) to the pavement from a rooftop on Lækjargata street in the city center. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told the National Broadcasting Service RÚV that people who were around heard a loud thud only to see that a man had fallen from the roof. Police was immediately notified. The man was taken to the National University Hospital where he was declared dead. There were no eye witnesses to the fall itself, and it is therefore unclear how exactly the accident came about.
Police does not suspect any foul play and is investigating the tragic event as an accident. It is unclear what the man was doing on the roof. There does not appear to have been a party or celebration in the building. Police has not said whether the man was alone on the roof or in the building when the accident took place.
Witnesses who heard the falll and saw the body told the local newspaper DV, which was the first to report on the tragedy, that the fall was ugly. There was blood everywhere, there was blood all over the cars parked in the parking lot.
