Do you like animals? Want to see them in their natural habitats? Then you should team up with volunteers that are heading to North Iceland to count seals on Sunday 19 July.

This will be the 9th annual Great Seal Count. The event is hosted by The Icelandic Seal Center in Hvammstangi town and the seals are counted on the nearby beaches of Vatnsnes peninsula and cape Heggstaðarnes around Húnaflói bay. Some of Iceland’s best seal watching locations are in this area.

The coastline is divided into small areas and the staff of the Seal center and the volunteers count the seals in each area. Everyone should be able to find a suitable distance to cover. After the count the Seal Center offers coffee and a cake at the center.

According to the staff of the Icelandic Seal Center the event is not suitable for children younger than 5 and kids between 5 and 15 years may only take part in the company of adults.

Last year 706 seals were counted in the area.

This is a great chance to be a scientist for a day. You can register by email: [email protected]  or call: +354-451-2345.

The distance from Reykjavík to the town of Hvammstangi is 194 km (120 mi) by car.
