A video of travelers running for their lives from waves crashing in on Reynisfjara black sand beach was shared on social media over the weekend reminds us that more is needed to ensure the safety of visitors at this popular destination.
Reynisfjara has been picked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world – but it's also one of the most dangerous tourist destinations in Iceland. Three people have drowned in the past ten years at the beach after powerful sneaker waves knocked them down, sweeping them out to sea.
The video, shared by New York based photographer Erica Mengouchian on Instagram, shows where a large group of travelers has walked right down to the edge of the water to stand in the surf, but are then taken by surprise as a large wave suddenly comes crashing in. Most of the people manage to run to safety, but a number of people, who fail to outrun the wave get drenched.
WAIT FOR IT… insane waves/weather! This place is no joke and these people don’t pay attention to the warning signs.
