A Yemeni man who had the status as an asylum seeker has been sentenced to the maximum 16 years in prison for the brutal murder of Sanita Brauna, a Latvian woman in September 2017. The man, Khaled Cairo, was found guilty of murder in the first degree. He was also sentenced to pay the parents of his victim 1.6 million ISK (16,000. USD/13,000 EUR), and each of her three children 3 million ISK (30,000 USD/24,000 EUR) in restitution.
Murderer blamed paramedics, doctors
Khaled Cairo was found guilty of having attacked the woman at her home on Hagamelur street in September. He beat the victim with bottles, choked her and beat her repeatedly in the head with a fire extinguisher.
Khaled maintained he was innocent of murdering Brauna. He admitted that he did attack her, but claimed that it wasn't his violent attack which led to her death, but instead blamed it on the incompetence or negligience of the paramedics who first arrived at the scene and the doctors at the emergency room. The judge rejected this absurd defense.

Samita's neighbor called the police after Khaled burst into her apartment. Sanita can be heard calling for help on the recordings of the 112 call. When Police arrived at the scene Khaled stood above the blood drenched body, holding the fire extinguisher. At this time he was only wearing his underwear and was covered in the blood of the victim from head to toe. Khaled refused to obey the officers who used mace to subdue him.
Psychitrists who interviewed Khaled deemed him fit to stand trial. The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the emergency room.
