The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued Yellow Weather Alerts for the area around Faxaflói and Breiðafjörður bays in West Iceland, including the Capital Region and the highway between Reykjavík and Keflavík Airport.
Travellers who are planning trips in West or North West Iceland today are urged to use caution while driving and to adjust their plans to account for delays.
ICE-SAR has also issued travel alerts for today, asking travellers to show caution and slow down while driving. .
Yellow Alert in effect
The Icelandic Meteorological Office is predicting strong northwesterly winds with snow in West Iceland, the Westfjords and North West Iceland.
The Alert is effective for the Capital Region and the area around Faxaflói from 12:00 at noon until 18:00 (6 pm).
For the area around Breiðafjörður from 9:00 am until 18:00 (6 pm).
For Nort West Iceland from 9:00 am until 20:00 (8 pm).
Gale, snow and avalanche warning for Westfjords
Conditions will be worst in the Westfjords where wo throughs will pass over in the next 24 hours with strong winds and moderate snowfall. The first passes one at noon today, the second one during the night.
People should expect continuous snowfall in near gale between the throughs. Very poor visibility and very difficult driving conditions.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority has issued avalanche warnings for the Northern Westfjords. The road between the towns of Súðavík and Ísafjörður has been closed due to avalanche danger. All roads in the Westfjords are either covered in snow or ice. Drivers are asked to show extreme caution.

Today strong winds and blowing snow are predicted from Keflavík to Reykjavík and from Reykjavík up to and including Snæfellsnes peninsula (Borgarnes to Hellnar to Stykkishólmur). Very poor visibility is expected.
