A Yellow Weather Alert has been issued for all of South Iceland west of the village Vík in South Iceland, all of West Iceland and the Northwest, including the Westfjords. The Weather Alert is in effect until noon tomorrow, Thursday December 21.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office is predicting gale force winds with snowshowers, reducing visibility to near zero. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has warned that the Ring Road and other major roads in the areas in question are covered with slick and icy spots. Travellers heading for the road should show extreme caution or revise their travel plans.
The IMO is expecting southwesterly wind 13-18 m/s (29-40 mph) in South Iceland west of Vík, in Southwest and West Iceland, the Westfjords and North Iceland west of Seyðisfjörður town. Limited visibility and difficult driving conditions can be expected during the snowshowers, especially on mountain and heath roads.
Travellers should show extra caution when crossing heaths. The Ring Road between West and North Iceland crosses Holtavörðuheiði, where visibility is already extremely limited. Conditions on the Ring Road between Reykjavík and South Iceland, where it crosses Hellisheiði heath are also expected to deteriorate.
