Yellow Weather Alert for West and South Iceland tonight, Monday 8495

Travelers should not head out on the road or plan any hikes tonight, Monday October 1. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a Yellow Weather Alert for South and West iceland.

The Weather Alert is effective from 19:00 (7 pm) until 1:00 after midnight. The IMO is expecting westerly gale or severe gale in West Iceland in the the region around Faxaflói bay, including the southern part of Snæfellsnes peninsula, and all of South Iceland, including the Golden Circle, the south coast and Black Sand Beaches west of Vík. Sustained windspeeds of 15-23 m/s (33-52 mph).

Take special care between Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Vík

Drivers are warned that strong winds and powerful localized winds and wind gusts can be hazardous to RVs and vehicles that are susceptible to wind. Last week an RV with four foreign travelres was blown off the road in West Iceland.

The wind is expected to be most severe near the coast. Localized winds and individual wind gusts, particularly near steep mountain sides can be hazardous to vehicles that are sensitive to wind, especially when the wind blows across the road . Dangerous winds are especially common in the Eyjafjöll region south of Eyjafjallajökull, from Seljalandsfoss waterfall to the town of Vík. Cars are regularly blown off the road in this region during winter storms.
