The Police in South Iceland has issued a warning to travellers in Öræfi region – the Ring Road between Skaftafell Visitor Center in Vatnajökull National Park and Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon.
The weather alert took effect at 13:00 today, Tuesday, and will remain in effect until tomorrow morning. The wind is not expected to slow down until 8:00 tomorrow morning in South Iceland and 10:00 in the morning in South East Iceland.
Yellow Alert in effect
The Icelandic Meteorological Office is predicting full gale winds with isolated wind gusts which can pose danger to vehicles which catch wind. Travellers driving RVs, camper vans or cars pulling travel campers should show extreme caution or revise their travel plans.
A easterly and northeasterly winds with sustained windspeeds of 20-25 m/s (45-56 mph) south of Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers, as well as the wind gusts could exceed 35 m/s (78 mph). Possibly also intermittent snow, e.g. on the road just west of Vík, with difficult driving conditions.
The IMO urges travellers to be cautious.

The worst weather should be expected in the foothills of Eyjafjöll mountain range, the area around Vík and Öræfi region in the foothills of Öræfajökull glacier (the Ring Road between Skaftafell visitor center and Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon).

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority reports that the entire Ring Road in South and South East Iceland is either icy or covered with snow, making the surface slippery. Travellers should show caution when traveling in South Iceland, and extra caution in the South East.
