The Icelandic budget airline WOW air has purchased seven new aircraft, including four jumbo-jets which could allow WOW to fly direct to destinations in Asia. Skúli Mogensen, the CEO and owner of WOW air told the local news TV station Stöð 2 that the company aims at doubling the number of passengers in the next couple of years.
Aiming at direct flights to Asia
WOW air flew it's first flight in 2012 to Paris, making the airline just five years old. Since then the budget airline has grown rapidly, flying direct to a number of destinations in Europe and the US. Last year the company received its first jumbo-jets, allowing it to add direct flights to destinations on the US West Coast. The new airlines will allow the company to commence direct flights to destinations in Asia.

Skúli Mogensen refused to confirm whether the airline was planning flights to Asia, but told Stöð 2 that the company was very interested in Asia. Asia, he pointed out, was a rapidly growing market but the cost of flying from Asia to Iceland was unnecessarily high, and that passengers typically had to make 1-2 transfers on their way to Iceland.
Doubling of passengers in 2 years
With the seven new planes the total fleet of WOW air will number 24. Among the planes WOW has purchased are four 365 seat Airbus A330-900neo jumbo-jets.
With the new planes Skúli expects the airline will be able to double it's number of passengers from 3 million this year to 6 million by 2019.
