According to the National Broadcasting Service, construction workers attempted yesterday to make cracks in Vaðlaheiði tunnel water tight. In February 50°C (122°F) hot water began to pour out of crevices inside the tunnel, disrupting construction work. Employees also need to drink 3 to 4 litres (0.8 – 1.5 gallons) of water during each shift to prevent their bodies from getting dehydrated.

Around 360 litres/second (5706 gpm) of hot water has been gushing from the tunnel daily since the leak began.

“We hope this will improve work conditions considerably. With a lower temperature inside the tunnel we should be able to resume normal work,” said Einar Hrafn Hjálmarsson, foreman of the Vaðlaheiði project.

The Vaðlaheiði tunnel is 28 percent completed, once fully constructed it will reduce the distance travelled between Akureyri and Húsavík by 16 km (10 miles).
