A traveller who was swept to the sea at Reynisfjara beach in South Iceland earlier today has been pronounced dead.
Police received an emergency call at 12:53 that a group of travellers was in distress at Kirkjufjara beach, at the west end of Reynisfjara beach. Three of the group, which was a family of four, managed to make it to safety on their own, while the fourth, was swept to sea.
All available first responders, Police and Search and Rescue Units in South Iceland, were immediately dispatched to the scene. At 14:01 the woman had been found, and she was immediately taken by the Coast Guard rescue helicopter to Reykjavík. The rest of the family, her husband and two children, were taken by ambulance.
Police in South Iceland has now announced that the woman was been pronounced dead upon arrival at the emergency room of Landspítalinn National University Hospital in Reykjavík. Police is investigating the circumstances of her death.

This is the second fatal accident at Reynisfjara beach in the last 12 months. On February 10 2016 a 40 year old Chinese man, who was travelling with his wife, drowned after he was swept to the sea near the basalt columns on the east edge of the beach. An American woman died in 2007 in a third fatal accident at Reynisfjara when the waves pulled her out.
Numerous other travellers have been narrowly rescued in recent years in close calls. Less than half an hour before today's tragic accident a young child was rescued when another traveller managed to grab her arm as she was being sucked out by a wave which had knocked her over.
