The annual Winter Lights Festival kicks off for the twelfth time today, Thursday, with over 200 events taking place all over the greater capital area. The festival is to illuminate the darkness of winter with a selection of cultural events for all ages. All events are free.

Sundlauganótt, or Night at the Swimming Pools, is part of the Winter Lights Festival and takes place on 7th January. Swimming pools partaking in this year’s event are Álftaneslaug, Lágafellslaug, Grafarvogslaug, Laugardalslaug, Sundhöll Reykjavíkur, Breiðholtslaug, Árbæjarlaug and the geothermal pool in Nauthólsvík. Join a wave-disco, ‘splashlympics’, or enjoy a magnificent light-show while lounging about in the hot tub.
Fans of ghost stories can embark on a ghost-walk at the Árbæjarsafn Open Air Museum lead by a 19th century character. A number of ghost sightings have been reported at the museum – so be prepared for the uncanny.
