Winter is coming in Iceland. The first autumn storms have been pummeling the island, wreaking havoc in South East and East Iceland. And now the Central Highlands are quickly being covered in snow. While the snow only adds to the magical quality of the landscapes it also tends to block access to the highlands to anyone not travelling on a specially equipped mountain trucks.

Fjallabak nature preserve closed to traffic
The Icelandic Environment Agency shared the above photos of conditions in Fjallabak nature preserve, which includes the highland oasis Landmannalaugar. The Agency points out that road conditions in the area are becoming progressively more challenging, making the roads impassable to all but mountain trucks and well equipped 4x4s.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Agency has closed the road to Landmannalaugar along with all highland roads east of Hofsjökull glacier. Kjalvegur road, which crosses the highlands between Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers, as well as Arnarvatnsvegur, west of Langjökull glacier, are still open, but are only suitable to specially equipped mountain trucks.

Respect travel warnings, road closings
You should always check road conditions with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority before heading out, and never under any circumstances venture out onto a road which has been closed or marked as impassable: The IRCA closes roads for a reason. Also, remember to check the weather outlook with the Icelandic Meteorological Office and any travel alerts issued by ICE-SAR
