Wind bursts close to mountains in South Iceland can reach a speed of up to 180 km/h (112 mph) 2461

A brutal wind from the east is raging over Iceland today with the south and west parts of the island being most severly hit.

According to The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) steady wind along the south coast is up to 28 m/s (101 km/h – 63 mph) while bursts close to mountains can reach up to 50 m/s (180 km/h – 112 mph).

UPDATE at 15.15 (3.15pm) The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has closed the Ring Road at Eyjafjöll mountains in South Iceland.
