The Sun Voyager sculpture in downtown Reykjavík appears as the backdrop for Neil Gaiman in the latest trailer for the hit TV Series American Gods. In the video Gaiman, the author of the books American Gods, which the series are based on, explains the premise of the series.
In the first episode we meet Shadow Moon who meets with Mr Wednesday, Odin (Wednesday was the day of Odin), and other gods, new and old. The series then explore this clash between the old and new gods of America.
Many fans recognized the backdrop to Gaiman, wondering what the connection was: What role did Iceland play in a show about the gods brought to America over the centuries by immigrants?
The reason why the Sun Voyager appears behind Gaiman is that the idea for the show originally came to Gaiman while he was visiting Iceland in 1998. Not by the dramatic landscapes or historical sites like Þingvellir, but by a display at a tourist center in downtown Reykjavík.
Gaiman explained how the idea came to him and what role Iceland plays in the story in a mini-documentary he posted to Facebook back in March.
During Gaiman's filming of the mini-documentary he stopped at a local bookstore in downtown Reykjavík, signing some of his books he found on the shelves. Who knows, perhaps some of the books are still on the shelves?
I might have just crept in and scribbled my name on a bunch of books here. #iceland pic.twitter.com/ejxDoWUOFr
