The whale watching company Gentle Giants in Húsavík town, North Iceland, has agreed to sponsor Charla Basran‘s doctoral thesis about whales in Skjálfandaflói bay. Charla, who is Canadian and specialises in humpback whales, also works as a guide for the company.

The thesis will focus on the impact of bycatch on marine mammals local to Iceland (non-target species accidentally caught in fishing nets are known as bycatch) and how Iceland can prevent further deaths.
Jóhanna S. Svavarsdóttir, Gentle Giant’s head of human resources said in a news release that the company is proud to sponsor such important research.
