We have a beautiful Icelandic spring weekend ahead of us according to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO). The weather will be calm around the country and although not balmy, quite warm considering the time of the year and that we have the Arctic Circle just north of the island.
Those staying in the southwest part can expect a little bit better weather than the rest of the country and can even look forward to excellent conditions for northern lights sightings on Saturday evening. The skies will be clear and according to IMO’S excellent Aurora forecast service we can expect a grade 3 northern lights activity (the scale is 1-9). Don’t let the low activity number discourage you, as IMO explains that grade 2 (low activity) can be beautiful and grade 3 (moderate) can be dazzling.
IMO’S weekend forecast
Thursday night
Increasing southeasterly and easterly wind, 13 to 20 m/s (29-45 mph/47-72 kmh) in the south part over night and starts to rain, strongest wind at the south coast. Lighter wind in the north and east and minor showers of rain or snow.
Friday
Slowly decreasing wind in the afternoon, but still some precipitation. Temperature 0 to 10 C (32-50 F), mildest in the west, but coldest inland in northeast Iceland.
Saturday
Northeast 5 to 13 m/s (11-29 mph/18-47 kmh), Some snow showers in the northeast and out at the northwest coast, temperatures around freezing point. Bright weather in the south and west, temperatures there 2 to 7 C during the day (36-45 F).
Sunday
North wind 3 to 8 m/s (7-18/11-29 kmh) and some clouds, but 5 to 10 m/s (11-22/18-36 kmh) and snow showers in places at the east coast. Temperatures 2 to 7 C (36-45 F), but around freezing level in the northeast. Colder during night.
