The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority has also issued a warning to travellers in South Iceland. Extremely violent storm gusts can be expected south of Vatnajökull glacier today. The wind speed in these gusts can reach as high as 35 m/s (78 mph). Wind speeds above 32.7 m/s (73 mph) are categorized hurricane strength. Driving under these conditions can be extremely dangerous. Hence travellers are urged to show caution.
The storm gusts are expected to be strongest on the stretch of the ring road south of Vatnajökull glacier, from Kvistareykir farm, along the Breiðamerkursandur beach and all the way east to the village of Höfn. The wind conditions are expected to be most severe from noon until four or five in the afternoon.
