The severe weather that hit Iceland yesterday evening has now declined but will pick up again late this evening, especially in Northwest and West Iceland.
A North strong gale, reaching up to 28 metres per second (62 mph), will increase near midnight, with precipitation in the north but mostly dry in the south.
Temperatures widely around zero degrees during the day but will fall in the afternoon.
Road conditions are poor in most parts of the country. Hellisheiði and Kríuvíkurvegur are impassable due to widespread heavy snow and ice.
Motorists are warned to drive with extreme caution in roads in West Iceland due to ice and snow. Brattabrekka and Fróðárheiði are closed due to heavy snow.
Many roads in the Westfjords have already become impassable due to ice and snow – Kleifaheiði, Miklidalur and Hálfdán are currently closed, however, Public Work Operations are working to clear the roads of snow. A blizzard is reported in Steingrímsfjarðarheiði, Þröskuldar, Gemlufallsheiði and in Súgandafjörður fjord.
Sandvíkurheiði, North Iceland, is impassable. Severe weather is reported in Northeast Iceland.
Many roads at higher elevations in East Iceland are impassable due to heavy snow. Roads at lower elevations are covered in ice.
