13. mar 2023 21:13

If you were planning on any travel or driving in South or South East Iceland tonight you should revise your plans or take extra care and proceed with utmost caution! The IMO has issued a yellow weather alert for all of South and South-East Iceland, warning of heavy wind, with potentially dangerous localized winds and wind gusts.

Dangerous to vehicles susceptible to wind
The weather warning is in effect from 16:30 for South Iceland and 17:30 for the South East. The storm is expected to have slowed down by 23:30. The IMO expects sustained windspeeds of 23-28 m/s (51- 63 mph) in South Iceland, with the strongest winds on the sands and plains west of Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, east toward the village Vík. Localized winds are expected to reach 45 m/s (100 mph).

Windspeeds are expected to be somewhat lower in the South East, with sustained windspeeds of 18-25 m/s (40-56 mph), but localized winds, especially in the Öræfi region and the foothills of Öræfajökull glacier, are still expected to reach 40 m/s (90 mph).

Winds of this magnitude can blow vehicles susceptible to wind off the road, or cause drivers to lose control. This includes RVs and camper vans.

Now that winter has arrived travelers should always keep up to date with weather alerts and the forecast on vedur.is, any travel warnings at safetravel.is and road conditions on the website of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority.
