The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a weather warning for today. Increasing southerly gale force winds, 15-23 m/s (34-51 mph) this morning, with moderate to heavy rain in the South and West Iceland, but lighter precipitation in North-East Iceland.

The wind will turning to southwest, but remain at gale force, reaching storm strength, with showers of snow and sleet, and quickly dropping temperatures during the morning, first in West Iceland. By afternoon or evening temperatures will have dropped below freezing, causing icing on roads and very slick road surfaces.

Driving in West Iceland? Show caution!
The IMO warns that driving conditions tomorrow might become challenging. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority warns that road conditions in West Iceland, to the South-East of the town of Borgarfjörður, and in North Iceland, near the town of Siglufjörður, will become dangerous due to powerful gusts of wind.

Show special caution whil driving ring road by Hafnarfjall mountain, near town of Borgarnes
The slopes of Hafnarfjall mountain, to the east of Borgarnes are particularly dangerous. The wind speed in these gusts can reach hurricane force of 30-40 m/s (67-89 mph).

Travellers are advised to check the weather forecast at the website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office, and to show caution, especially when driving along mountain sides where powerful wind gusts can form. Icy roads and strong winds can easily cause motorists to lose control of their vehicles.
