Weather warning: Danger of flooding as heavy rain continues in West Iceland 3071

13. mar 2023 20:31

Rescue units in west Iceland had a hectic evening during yesterday’s storm. Units were called out in Sauðárkrókur, northwest Iceland, after the roof blew off the town’s cement factory.

Rescue teams in Bolungarvík, Westfjords, were activated to secure fishing boats in the town’s harbour and loose items. The storm also caused widespread disruption to transport in the area.

21 homes in Patreksfjörður, Westfjords, were evacuated due to avalanche threat and a slush flow occurred in the small fishing village of Bíldudalur, Westfjords. A slush flow is a type of snow avalanche that occurs when the snow pack becomes saturated with water.

The Icelandic Met Office has issued a flood warning for the western regions as heavy rainfall is expected to continue today, Monday. A continuing thaw is also expected which can lead to rivers overflowing their banks.

According to the IMO’s forecast, strong winds will continue in the northern regions today. Sleet or rain showers are to be expected, particularly across the southern areas, although the northeast will remain dry. Maximum temperature 6 degrees Celsius (43 Fahrenheit) in the south.

A large number of passengers arriving at Keflavík International Airport yesterday evening had to wait inside the aircrafts for an hour before being able to disembark.

Strong gusts of wind prevented airport employees from attaching jet bridges to the aircrafts.
