The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a Yellow Alert for the Westfjords and North Iceland, effective from 18:00 today, lasting until Friday. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority has similarly warned travellers that a heavy snowstorm and strong winds will make for challenging or dangerous driving conditions.
Yellow Alert in effect
The IMO Yellow Alert is in effect from today until Friday for the northern parts of Iceland. Drivers are asked to show extra caution as snow in the north is expected to reduce visibility and create slick patches on roads. Powerful gale force winds, with individual wind gusts which can reach hurricane force can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles. RVs and travel trailers can be blown off the road in these kinds of winds.
Today at 18:00 a Yellow Alert is in effect for the north shore of Snæfellsnes peninsula and the Breiðafjörður bay area, the Westfjords and North Iceland. A northeasterly gale and snow can be expected until Friday. Travellers are warned that visibility can drop to near zero.
