A group of friends from the Mediterranean island Malta spent ten days travelling around Iceland in a motorhome and made a great video travel diary of the road trip (watch below). Ricky Schembri and Alan Grech, two of the team told us about their adventures which started when the idea of a trip to another island first came up.
“When a couple of friends of ours said they were planning to go to Iceland and invited us to join there was no way we would decline that opportunity. After some thorough planning and narrowing down an itinerary that would barely fit our time in the country, another four friends joined and we all embarked in the beautiful adventure that was Iceland.
We were two sets of four in a couple of motorhomes but logistics and trying to fully utilize our time (without having to wait for each other) meant that we only met the other motorhome about three to four times during the whole ten days.
I'm quite claustrophobic and was quite skeptic with regards to living in a motorhome, but honestly in hindsight, I wouldn't have done it any other way, says Alan.
We were four individuals on a mission to have fun exploring the country and we feel we succeeded through and through. With regards to places one should not miss, there are many, but we would definitely include the following: Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Jökulsárló glacial lagoon, Reynisfjara beach, Fjarðárrargljúfur canyon, the waterfalls Dettifoss, Selfoss, and Godafoss, Stykkishólmur town, Grundarfjörður fjord and a glacier hike.
Our trip was mainly characterized by three things. First and foremost, the immense beauty that is Iceland. No picture or video can ever fully convey the surprising and varied beauty of the landscapes we've seen.
Second was the adventure of living in the motorhome itself. Like I mentioned before, there was much unexpected enjoyment in this. We all had our own roles, the driver, the tour leader, the chef and the videographer, all with accompanying daily sub-responsibilities.
Thirdly, our trip was in July and for the ten days that we were in Iceland, the sun never set. We would go to sleep and wake up in daylight. It was surreal and by the fifth day we were not sure whether we had visited a place that same day or the day before. Days started to blend into each other and it all felt like a prolonged dream sequence.
I could go on for days on what a beautiful adventure this trip was. All the planning, getting lost, having high expectations yet still be surprised, budgeting and changing plans as we go. Something like this needs to be experienced to be understood, says Alan and adds:
Our video is nothing more than an attempt to show the beauty that Iceland is and the silly antics of four individuals that don't want to grow up.”
