On Saturday Icelanders chose their entry into the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. After the seven finalists had performed their entries on live TV viewers texted in their preferred choice. According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, which aired the competition, the program was watched by 56% of the population. When those who watched the program on demand the total viewership reaches 73%.
The two songs which received most votes in the first round then proceeded to a head-to-head competition. These were Paper, performed by Svala Björgvins, and Is this love? by Daði. Svala won the final match handlily, receiving 63% of the votes. A total of 243,000 votes were cast. 330,000 people live in Iceland.
Here you can watch Svala's performance which won over the crowd on Saturday:
The aesthetics of the official video for the song are heavy on the early-90s aesthetics, somewhat muted neon colors, make-up which is crowned with blue lipstick and an abandoned warehouse as bakcdrop.
Svala beat out Daði Freyr Pétursson and team who performed a some which was close to the polar opposite of Paper, a somewhat Daft Punk-esque love song titled Is this Love, complete with a ugly-sweater clad nerdcore synthesizer-band.
We at Iceland Insider loved both songs for their very different qualities, and we wish Svala all the best and hope that she will do well at the May contest in Kiev, Ukraine.
