The Icelandic Confederation of Labour (Alþýðusamband Íslands) celebrated its 100th anniversary on the 12th of March. In commemoration of the event, members of the women’s choirs Katla and Hrynjandi, the men’s choir Karlakór Reykjavíkur and the confederation’s brass band participated in a “flash-mob” at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík.

Participants stunned guests when they burst out singing Maístjarnan, a song which has become the anthem of Icelandic workers and is often sung at rallies and on International Workers’ Day, 1st of May.

The song was composed by Jón Ásgeirsson while the lyrics are by Halldór Laxness, Iceland’s first and only Nobel laureate, having received the prize in 1955.

Around 160 people took part in the stunning act.
