Since the onset of the ongoing seismic activity began on August 16th around 12,000 earthquakes have struck in the Bárðarbunga volcanic system. Below is an animation by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) showing all earthquakes that have been detected in the area.
In ordinary circumstances about 10,000 to 15,000 earthquakes over M3 are detected automatically per year in the whole of Iceland according to IMO. That number is now up to 28,000, the majority of the earthquakes being in northwestern Vatnajökull glacier, the home to the huge subglacial volcano.
For the last few weeks 50 to 100 earthquakes have been detected in the area every 24 hours.
