Warning: Wind gusts can reach 144 km/h or 90 mph near mountains in South Iceland 3914

The Icelandic Met office (IMO) has issued a travel warning for the Westfjords, Southeast Iceland and mountain roads around Iceland today (Monday). Strong northeast wind, or 15-23 m/s (54-83 km/h, 33.5-54.5 mph) is expected in those area accompanied by rain or sleet, and snow in mountains.

Strong wind gusts can also be expected near mountains. The strongest gusts will be near Öræfajökull glacier in Southeast Iceland, where gusts can reach 40 m/s. That is 144 km/h or 90 mph so avoid travelling along the Ring Road in the area if you can.

The wind will be generally slower in the capital area and the Southwest part of the country and mostly dry.

The temperature will be 0 til 8 C (32-46 F), mildest in Southeast Iceland.
