The roof of the ice caves in Vatnajökull glacier, Southeast Iceland, have begun to deteriorate and crack due to rising temperatures, reports Morgunblaðið newspaper.

Local guiding companies have ceased offering tours into the caves and visitors are cautioned to stay away from them.

Tours into ice caves have become immensely popular among foreign visitors over the past years. Around one thousand guests visited the caves this winter.

In a statement from Vatnajökull National Park, people are advised to stay away from the ice caves as “they can collapse without notice”.
