Warning: Snow and strong wind in the west, north and east, hurricane strength wind south of Vatnajökull glacier 4668

The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) has issued a warning. Considerable or heavy snow is expected in the northeastern part of the country in the afternoon. A strong gale (medial wind more than 20 m/s – 45 mph – 72 kmh) is expected in the Westfjords during the day and tonight, but in the southeast and eastern parts during the evening.

Wind speed around or over 40 m/s – 89 mph – 144 kmh, are forecasted to the south of Vatnajökull glacier in the evening today (Sunday) with possibilities of sand storm. This is no travelling weather at all.

Southwesterly wind, 5-13 m/s (11-29 mph – 18-47 kmh) and wet weather in most parts of the country, but becoming northeasterly strong gale in the Westfjords late tonight with snow. Increasing from the north elsewhere in the country during the day, widely 13-23 m/s (29-51 mph – 47-83 kmh) in the afternoon, strongest in the northernmost part, but 18-25 (40-56 mph – 65-90 kmh) in the evening in the southeast and eastern parts of the country. Sleet and later snow in the northern part of the country, considerable or heavy precipitation from Tröllaskagi peninsula in North Iceland and as far east as the northern part of the Eastfjords. Isolated rainshowers or snowshowers in the south. Becoming colder, temperature around freezing point in the afternoon, but temperature just above freezing point in the southernmost part. Northerly wind 5-10 m/s (11-22 mph – 18-36 kmh) and partly fair weather in the west tomorrow (Monday), but slowly decreasing wind and precipitation in the eastern part of the country.
