A glacial outburst flood from under Mýrdalsjökull, South Iceland, is in progress, according to the Icelandic Met Office. Floods such as these happen when glacier ice is melted by hydrothermal heating and the water collects under the ice. The water will then begin to flow out from under the ice and towards the sea. These floods can become very large and cause massive damage to roads and bridges.
Reynir Ragnarsson, with the IMO, told Morgunblaðið newspaper that the flood in Múlakvísl river is quite small, as of yet. “This happens regularly, but one never knows how big it will become,” he explained.
People are urged to show caution when travelling in the area around Múlakvísl river.
