ICE-SAR and Park Rangers in Vatnajökull National Park are urging travellers not to venture out on the ice at frozen glacial lagoons. The ice is not safe and in case someone falls through the ice rescue can be near to impossible: Rescuers would have an extremely tough time reaching the accident site across the thin ice.

ICE-SAR, which operates the website Safetravel.is, your one-stop site for travel advice in Iceland, shared the above image of travellers on the ice of Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon:

Yesterday the park ranger in Vatnajökull National Park informed us that people were walking out onto the lagoon's ice sheet at Fjallsárlón. This is VERY unsafe as the ice is very thin and not able to support a lot of weight. If the ice breaks you will fall into very cold water and rescue is difficult due to the thinness of the ice. Use caution and DON'T walk on the ice or ice bergs ever!

Hiking out to the middle of the glacial lagoon might look like a great adventure, but its no fun for anyone if you don't return alive from your dream adventure in Iceland. Please stay safe and don't venture out on the ice!
