Travelers are urged to show caution when visiting Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and other beaches in South Iceland tomorrow morning. Giant waves of up to six to seven meters (20-23 ft) are expected.
Einar Sveinbjörnsson with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority tells the local news site Vísir that waves of this size are rare at this time of year. Its primarily during winter that we see waves of this sizew, up to ten meters (33 ft) tall ocean waves which then can crash ashore. It's primarily when the wind blows from the south-west we get these monster waves along the shore.
Einar told Vísir that he believes the beach should be closed tomorrow morning, at least until noon.
Several people have been killed on the Black Sand Beaches of South Iceland in recent years as they have been swept to sea by sudden giant waves. Travelers are urged to show extreme caution. Not all waves crash as far up the shore: Ever tenth, twentieth wave is a monster which comes much further up the shore. These waves can easily knock people over, and then drag them out to sea. It can be extremely difficult, if not impossible to rescue people who are swept to sea on the Black Sand Beaches.
