According to Fréttablaðið, Yngvi Ragnar Kristjánsson, chairman of Skútustaðahreppur district council, proposes that the travel ban to the Holuhraun eruption area north of Vatnajökull glacier, be reviewed. He says people have shown great interest in travelling to the area to view the eruption.

Lava has been rushing from the fissure since late August 2014 and could continue for years, say scientists. Although the Holuhraun lava field continues to grow, it progresses at a much slower pace than before. Only scientists, members of the press and police have been allowed to approach the lava flow because of the high levels of sulphuric gases in the area and the risk of a fissure erupting below the glacier, causing a flood.

The chairman’s proposal suggests visitors could travel to the eruption site on snowmobiles from Lake Mývatn. Yngvi, members of the local police department and rescue units travelled the same route this autumn and deem it perfectly safe. Visitors will have a clear view of the eruption and lava field from the top of Kattbekingur, located northwest of the eruption.
