Wage negotiations disrupt flights to and from Keflavík Airport 3636

A number of international flights were delayed at Keflavík Airport this morning due to air traffic controllers’ wage dispute. An overtime ban is in force while wage discussions take place.

According to the National Broadcasting Service, no passenger flights could land between 9pm and 7am this morning due to the ban. The action affected more than 20 flights which were scheduled to and from North-America and Europe. The ban is likely to affect further air traffic this evening and tomorrow morning. Passengers are advised to monitor arrivals and departures on their airline’s websites or the website of Keflavik Airport.

In a statement from the Icelandic Travel Industry Association, the organisation criticised the traffic controllers’ actions, saying: “This will greatly affect the Icelandic tourist industry. It’s not good when a small group of workers can take transportation to and from the country hostage. Hopefully the two disputing parties manage to settle matters quickly so that air services can go back to normal.”
