Every year volunteers who love remote wilderness, want to visit one of the most beautiful parts of Iceland and pitch in to protect nature walk a selected part of the beaches of Hornstrandir nature preserve, collecting trash. The coastline of Hornstrandir, with its many fords, is far too large to clean each year, so the annual clean-up focuses on one fjord, which is picked clean. The trash is then shipped out by the Coast Guard.

This year the volunteer teams will be cleaning up Furufjörður fjord on the North coast of Hornstrandir, the regional news site bb.is reports. A boat will take the team to Hrafnfjörður on the South coast. The group will the hike over the mountain range to Furufjörður, where they will spend the night and spend the next day picking trash before returning to the town of Ísafjörður on the Coast Guard vessel.. Volunteers are provided with housing, supper and dinner, as well as transportation.

While it is probably too late to make last-minute arrangements to join this year’s expedition  anyone interested in joining the volunteers next year should contact the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær to reserve a spot! Anyone interested should contact  [email protected] for further information.
