Around 30 people, mainly volunteers, counted yesterday (Sunday) seals near Vatnsnes peninsula and Heggstaðarnes around Húnaflói bay which is located between Strandir region and Skagaströnd in North Iceland.

The managing director of the The Icelandic Seal Center, Unnur Valborg Hilmarsdóttir, told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that the group started counting during the middle of the day due to optimal conditions at sea.

Last year, between six hundred and seven hundred seals were counted in the area. Nonetheless, experts believe that there are around 1000 seals in the area this year. The results of the count will be made available in the coming days.
