Volcanic pollution in narrow parts of the west and northwest today 1952

13. mar 2023 20:08

The gas dispersion from the Holuhraun eruptions follows the same pattern as in the last few days. Sulfur dioxide pollution is expected west and northwest of the eruption site today (Friday) and tomorrow.

On Saturday some strong winds will carry more concentrated volcanic pollution all the way to Ísafjörður town, which is around 320 km (200 mi) from the eruption site, or just about as far away as you can get from Holuhraun in the country, see map below.

Air quality should be good in populated areas today according to the Icelandic Met Office's (IMO) interactive map.

You can view air pollution measurements from around Iceland here. Page is in Icelandic but each town/place is colour coded.

Live air pollution measurements from Reykjavík's monitoring are sites here.

Air Quality Index (AQI)

GREEN      Good
YELLOW   Moderate
ORANGE  Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
RED            Unhealthy
PURPLE   Very Unhealthy
MAROON Hazardous

And here is the interactive map by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) showing how the gases from the eruption in the centrel highlands will travel over Iceland in the next 36 hours.
