A group of German travellers on-board a sailboat which was adrift at sea were rescued after losing all its sails in a severe storm on Wednesday. According to a post on the Facebook page of the Search and Rescue Unit Þorbjörn from Grindavík village on the Reykjanes peninsula, the boat had lost its engine power some days ago.
A video posted on the Facebook page of the Rescue Unit Þorbjörn shows that conditions at sea when the boat was rescued were far from ideal.
Adrift at sea, without engine power or sails
Otti Rafn Sigmarsson, the vice chairman of the Rescue Unit Þorbjörn from Grindavík told The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that the crew of the sailboat was both mentally and physically exhausted when they were rescued.
“They had lost engine power a few days ago. Then they are hit by this awful storm, and they lose the main sail. When the rescue team finally reached them all the sails of the yacht were torn to pieces”
The boat was located 19 nautical miles (35 km) to the south of Grindavík, a fishing village on the Reykjanes peninsula, when rescue teams were dispatched. The rescue team was at sea, making their way to the German sailboat within 7-8 minutes.
Crew was utterly exhausted
Conditions were extremely bad, Otti tells RÚV, a strong storm, and four meter (13 feet) high waves. “The crew of the sailboat was completely exhausted and extremely tired. One of the group was seasick and in a very bad shape.”
According to a post on the Facebook page of Þorbjörn the rescue went well, the sailboat was towed to harbour in Grindavík where it now awaits repairs.
Þysk skuta i vandræðum
