A foreign traveller driving a 4×4 Land Rover SUV, who passed a tour bus earlier this week can thank his lucky stars he is still alive and in piece. The man had just passed a tour bus carrying 35 Chinese travellers on the icy Ring Road east of Vík in South Iceland when he lost control of his vehicle. A dashboard video captured how the man fought to keep the road on the road. The car finally came to a complete stop on the side of the road.

The driver of the tour bus, Hafþór Pálsson, told the local news site Vísir that the bus was driving at 80 kmh (50 mph)  when the SUV made an attempt to pass on the road. He said that he had offered the driver of the SUV an opportunity to overtake the bus by slowing down and signaling with the turn signal that the road was clear. (Icelandic drivers use the right turn signal to signal to cars behind them that it's safe to pass) The driver of the SUV did not use the opportunity.

The I suddenly notice he is speeding alongside the bus. I move closer to the shoulder to give him more room. Then when he had overtaken me he makes a sudden turn back to the right. I was taken by surprise. When you are passing cars, and there is nobody coming from the opposite direction you return gradually back to the right lane. But he made a sudden move, and lost control of the vehicle. I managed to slow down. Otherwise I would have ended up ramming him.

In addition to speeding on a icy road, and making too sharp a turn to the right after passing the bus, the driver of the rental car, who was a foreign traveller, seems to have made another mistake. The car appears not to have been in four wheel drive.
