According to official statistics there are some 2,498 sheep farms in Iceland. The number of sheep is somewhere around 480,000. Most of the farms are rather small, with fewer than 200 sheep, 1,587 farms had fewer than 200 sheep each, while only 108 farms had more than 600 sheep.
Heiða Guðný Ásgeirsdóttir's farm Ljótarstaðir in South Iceland, close to the feared volcano Katla, is one of the larger sheep farmers. Heiða Guðný has 500 sheep at her farm, making her farm one of the largest in the region.
