According to official statistics there are some 2,498 sheep farms in Iceland. The number of sheep is somewhere around 480,000. Most of the farms are rather small, with fewer than 200 sheep, 1,587 farms had fewer than 200 sheep each, while only 108 farms had more than 600 sheep.

Heiða Guðný Ásgeirsdóttir's farm Ljótarstaðir in South Iceland, close to the feared volcano Katla, is one of the larger sheep farmers. Heiða Guðný has 500 sheep at her farm, making her farm one of the largest in the region.

The following video, produced by Icelandic Lamb, the marketing association of Icelandic Lamb, offers a fun glimpse into the life of an Icelandic sheep farmer. One of the things a sheep farmer must do is shear the flock every autumn: Heiða talks about how to shear sheep and the qualities of the wool, but also about the benefits of living at an isolated farm, far away from everyone else!
