Today Unnur Brá Konráðsdóttir, a member of Iceland's parliament, made a speech in parliament while breastfeeding her newly born baby. While nursing in public is not at all considered controversial in Iceland, it's believed this was a first in Iceland's parliament, called Alþingi, and has been widely celebrated.
Unnur Brá Konráðsdóttir, age 42, is a parlimentarian for the ruling Indipendence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) and her daughter was born 1 September.
Last year Björt Ólafsdóttir, a member of parliament for the Bright Future Party, (Björt framtíð) joined the growing number of Icelandic women who have ‘freed the nipple’ on Twitter. The parliamentarian published a photo of her breast under the caption: “This is for feeding babies. Shove that up your patriarchy.”
