A local guide Teitur Þorkelsson was surprised to see a foreign traveller tear off his clothes and jump in for a swim in the waves at Djúpalónssandur beach in at the foot of Snæfellsjökull glacier in West Iceland. The traveller, who turned out to be a Slovakian man travelling with a group of friends, seemed to have realized he had picked the wrong place to swim, as he never made it very far into the surf. Teitur, who shared a video of the incident on Facebook, told the local news site Vísir that the man was lucky to make it out of the water alive.

The caption on the video Teitur shared says it all:

A naked man seeing if he can drown himself at Djúpalónssandur beach

Teitur Þorkelsson told Vísir that while it is perfectly ok to swim in the ocean around Iceland, Djúpalónssandur is a terrible place to swim. I'm an avid ocean swimmer myself, used to swim in the sea around Iceland, but I would never try to swim at this location. He explains that the rocky beach makes it extremely difficult to get a secure footing and that the waves which come crashing in can easily knock people over. The Slovakian adventurer seemed to realize this after being knocked down by one of the waves, returning ashore to the great cheer of his friends and travel companions.

We at Iceland Insider don't recommend people try to copy this act: If you are interested in swimming in the ocean in Iceland, please try to pick a better spot! The Nauthólsvík beach in Reykjavík is a great alternative.
