Security at the Glerártorg mall in the town of Akureyri in North Iceland had to escort the man out of the mall after shoppers complained over the man harassing them with his message of how to avoid the wrath of god. The video below, shot by a reporter for the local news site visir.is shows where mall security escorts the man out of the mall.
A Preacher of Hell travelling around Iceland
The preacher’s confrontational style of delivering his message of the evils of gays, extramarital sex and the certainty of eternal damnation, has failed to generate him a local following. The local news site visir.is has followed the man's travels around Iceland. In October the Police in Reykjavík had to interfere with the man and a fellow American preacher who were harassing college students in Reykjavík, preaching eternal damnation and homophobia, and in November the local news site Bæjarins Besta reported that Police in the Westfjords received complaints as Simon was shouting his message in the village of Hnífsdalur and the town of Ísafjörður.
The man walked around the streets of Hnífsdalur late one night, stopping in front of houses to shout his sermons at the residents who were inside. After receiving numerous complaints police stopped the man to explain to him that he was causing a nuisance. Police explained to the local news site Bæjarins Besta that the man had not been arrested because the man was free to preach his religion on public thoroughfares. Since the Glerártorg mall is private property security guards could escort the man out.
Preachers who’s sermons dwell primarily on hell and eternal damnation are known as “helvítispredíkarar” in Icelandic, which translates to “Preachers of Hell”. Simon has been described as a Preacher of Hell by local media.
