Guests on a whale watching tour in Steingrímsfjörður fjord in the Strandir region of the Westfjords were treated to a surprise show by a pod of white beaked dolphins. Swimming alongside the whale watching boat and jumping clear of the water, the pod proved why Steingrímsfjörður fjord is one of the best sites in Iceland for whale watching.

The video was shot by Judith Scott, a guide with Láki Tours, which operates from the town of Hólmavík on the shores of Steingrímsfjörður. To enjoy the show you should choose HD and full-screen:

White beaked dolphins, who grow to 3 m (10 ft) long, are among the largest of the dolphins. Fishermen and seafarers are often treated to the acrobatic arts of the white beaked dolphins, as the whales like to ride the bow wave of boats, jumping clear of the surface. The white beaked dolphins are not considered threatened, and their population in Icelandic waters is estimated to be severa tens of thousands of individuals.
