The Icelandic Veterinary Association has authorised the limited slaughtering of chickens and pigs on animal welfare grounds. Farmers will also be allowed to sell the meat, reports the National Broadcasting Service.

The Icelandic Veterinary Association is a member of BHM, the Association of Academics, whose member unions have been on strike since mid-April.
The Association decided to authorise the limited slaughtering of animals to avoid overcrowded facilities and to allow farmers to earn an income and provide for the animals.
