Iceland’s contribution to the Venice Biennale was closed this morning. Venitian officials claim the artist broke the law by the use of the venue for religious activities although Icelandic organizers presented documents that state the venue was not a church.

The installation, called The Mosque: First Mosque in the Historic City of Venice, was created by Swiss/Icelandic artist Christoph Büchel and is located in a former Catholic church in the Cannaregio neighbourhood. It was to serve as a place of activity for the Venice Muslim Community and includes educational and cultural programmes for the public. The project was done in collaboration with Muslim associations in Venice and Iceland.
