Beginning on August 9 travellers who visit Skaftafell Visitor Center will be charged a fee for parking their cars. The parking fees will be used to pay for maintenance of the visitor center and other urgent projects in the park.
According to an announcement from the National Park the parking fee will be 600 ISK (5.8 USD/4.9 EUR) for regular passenger vehicles and 900 ISK (8.7 USD/7.3 EUR) for larger vehicles, including tour buses and large mountain trucks. During the summer 4,500 people driving 1,300 vehicles visit the Skaftafell Visitor Center. The traffic has increased significantly in the past few years, putting a strain on the infrastructure of the park and the facilities of the Visitor Center.

Earlier this summer parking fees were introduced at Seljalandsfoss waterfall in South Iceland. Þingvellir National Park has also introduced parking fees. In both cases the fees are introduced and levied by public bodies, the National Parks in the case of Þingvellir and Skaftafell, or the local municipal authority, in the case of Seljalandsfoss. Attempts by some private landowners to charge parking fees, like Hraunfossar waterfalls in West Iceland, have been blocked by the state.
