The fire broke out early Thursday morning when the travellers were asleep. The fire was concentrated in the basement of the building, but thick smoke filled retail space on the ground floor of the apartment and the stairwell. The travellers who were staying in apartments in the building made it out onto balconies where they were rescued by the fire department.
After the accident the Metropolitan Police investigated whether the apartments were incorrectly registered or whether an illegal guesthouse was being operated in the building. The National Broadcasting Service RÚV reports that the Sheriff's department, which oversees the registration of Airbnb's in the Metropolitan Area, has now confirmed that three apartments in the building have been registered as travel rentals.
